Indigenous & Media Community Roundtable – Register Now!

Invisibility as well as false, inaccurate and incomplete narratives have led to the erasure of Indigenous people. The information gap and lack of representation have perpetuated damaging stereotypes. Media narratives, too, have helped shape Indigenous-focused perceptions, attitudes and behaviors across Minnesota. In partnership with We Are Still Here Minnesota, and MIGIZI, MPR will host a series of community conversations involving media professionals and Indigenous community members aimed at increasing mutual understanding.

Led by Indigenous leaders and moderated by David Cournoyer, a Twin Cities-based consultant and former TV reporter, these virtual Zoom events will be interactive sessions that examine systemic and historic issues, cultural differences and daily reporting challenges. Each session will explore the role media can play in community solutions for changing problematic racial narratives through self-reflection, listening and exchange.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, the first session features Dr. Anton Treuer, a professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and author of the book, Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask. A member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, Dr. Treuer is a frequent speaker on amplifying authentic voices and promoting narrative change through such means as a “cultural toolbox.”.
